EUGENIE CHAN THEATER PROJECTS    Community Engagement Coordinator (San Francisco)

Eugenie Chan Theater Projects (ECTP) is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to help bring The Truer History of the Chan Family—our play-turned-feature film—into community spaces in San Francisco.

This project is rooted in narrative reclamation. Chinese American stories in the American West have too often been erased, simplified, or told by others. This film invites communities to gather, reflect, laugh, and see themselves—fully and complexly—on screen.

Screenings to date have drawn deeply intergenerational audiences, sparking conversations between elders, parents, and young people about migration, belonging, and identity. We are eager to build on that momentum.

By agreement with the Screen Actors Guild, screenings may not charge admission.  Instead, we are seeking mission-aligned partners—community centers, libraries, cultural organizations, small venues, and affinity groups—who share a commitment to cultural storytelling and community dialogue. Ideal partners may be able to offer a modest stipend and allow us to invite voluntary donations from attendees.

This is not transactional touring. It is relationship-building through art.

Working closely with the Artistic and Managing Directors, the Coordinator will identify and cultivate presenters and partners who see this work as both a screening and a gathering—an opportunity to connect Chinese American history with broader civic and cultural conversations, and to convene audiences across generations.

About the Work
ECTP develops and produces the plays of Eugenie Chan, a fifth-generation San Franciscan whose forebears sold slippers in Chinatown, dry goods in the desert, and love in the bordellos. Her work blends myth, family lore, imagined histories, and humor to illuminate the epic sweep—and intimate contradictions—of Chinese American life in the American West.
The Truer History of the Chan Family expands that storytelling onto the screen, inviting dialogue about belonging, resilience, and who gets to author history.  Learn more at www.eugeniechantheater.org.

Position Overview
We are seeking a thoughtful, organized, and relationship-oriented consultant who understands community engagement as a practice of listening, reciprocity, and strategic follow-through.

The Coordinator will help map and build a network of values-aligned partners who can host screenings and community watch events in 2027–28. Existing leads and contacts will be provided; the consultant will deepen, expand, and prioritize this outreach.

Scope of Work
  • Research and identify community-based organizations, libraries, cultural centers, affinity groups, and small venues aligned with ECTP’s mission.
  • Conduct outreach via email, phone, and in-person meetings as appropriate.
  • Cultivate relationships with prospective partners and assess mutual fit.
  • Develop a clear rubric to evaluate, profile, and rank prospects based on alignment, capacity, and audience reach.
  • Track and document outreach activity and results in an organized system.
  • Curate prioritized prospect lists to guide ongoing engagement strategy.

The Ideal Consultant Will Bring
  • Experience in community engagement, outreach, fundraising, or mission-driven marketing.
  • Cultural competency and comfort working across diverse communities.
  • Excitement about ECTP’s mission and Chinese American storytelling.
  • Strong listening skills and relationship-building instincts.
  • Excellent follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Clear, persuasive writing and strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Compensation
  • 145 total contract hours at $40/hour (not to exceed $5,800).
  • Anticipated 6 hours per week, mutually determined monthly.
  • Monthly hours may flex depending on project needs and deadlines.
  • Classified as an independent contractor.
  • ECTP is fiscally sponsored by Intersection for the Arts; the consultant will submit monthly invoices to ECTP for approved hours.
Contract Term
Projected pre-work: January 2027 – August 2027 (approximately 24 weeks, not every week)

Location
Hybrid. Primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings in the Bay Area. Access to a computer, reliable internet, and availability for virtual meetings are required.
